Agria is the world's oldest pet insurer, founded in Sweden in 1890 and selling in the UK since 2009. It ranks first in our guide to the best pet insurance providers in the UK, and here is why, along with the details worth checking before you buy.
Our verdict
Agria is the insurer to beat if you want lifetime cover and nothing else. It does not sell time-limited or per-condition policies at all, its top plan now covers £20,000 of vet fees a year, and there is no upper age limit to join. Its customer ratings are the strongest in the market, with 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from almost 13,000 reviews and the top customer score in Which?'s latest pet insurance ratings. It is rarely the cheapest quote, but it is one of the safest places to put your dog's cover.

Every policy includes free 24/7 video calls with a vet through the Agria app, and Agria can pay your vet directly. Dental illness is covered as well as dental accidents, which sets it apart from much of the market. Puppies can be covered from 8 weeks, and there is a 5% multi-pet discount.
Agria also runs one of the best perks in UK pet insurance. If you adopt from a participating rescue centre, your dog gets five weeks of free cover with up to £5,000 of vet fees, whatever their age.
What it costs
Agria sits in the middle to upper part of the market. You are paying for high limits and a strong claims record rather than a low headline price, and the £20,000 Premium plan costs noticeably more than the £3,000 Lite plan. As with every insurer, your dog's breed and age and your postcode move the price more than anything else, so get a quote on at least two cover levels to see where the value lands.
The catches
- Check the excess on your schedule. Every policy has a fixed excess per condition each year, and some also carry a percentage excess on every claim. It will be shown on your policy schedule, so read it before you buy, not when you claim.
- Dental illness comes with a condition. You need a dental check within the previous 15 months, with any recommended treatment done, or gum and tooth problems will not be covered.
- Pre-existing conditions are excluded, as they are with almost every insurer.
- It only does lifetime cover. For most owners that is a strength, but if you only want cheap accident cover, you will need to look elsewhere.
Should you buy it?
If you want a lifetime policy from an insurer with a proven claims record and some of the highest limits on the market, Agria is the easiest recommendation in UK pet insurance. Does Agria cover dental treatment?
Yes, both dental injury and dental illness, which many insurers exclude. For gum and dental illness your dog must have had a dental check in the previous 15 months, and any treatment recommended at that check must have been done.
