UK dog food recalls

What has actually been recalled in the UK, what to check on your pack, and how to get your money back. This page covers Food Standards Agency alerts and, separately, recalls the FSA never published, because those are the ones owners miss.

Last checked against the FSA alert feed on 1 September 2026.

Live recall · announced 17 August 2026

Years (More Years Limited)

Years voluntarily recalled every Signature fresh meal after reports of dogs developing sudden dry eye in both eyes at once. Its investigation is focused on possible contamination within part of its buckwheat supply rather than on buckwheat itself. No causal link has been established and laboratory testing is ongoing. The Chef's Collection range, which uses quinoa, is excluded.

Products affected

  • Steak & Kidney Hotpot
  • Surf & Turf
  • Salmon & Pollock
  • Turkey Fricassee
  • Chicken Casserole
  • Pork Stew

What to do

Stop feeding it immediately whether or not your dog has symptoms. Do not feed it to any other animal and do not donate or sell it. Return it to your point of purchase for a full refund: Years says you need no receipt and no order number, there is no time limit, and a part-used pack is refunded in full. If your dog has redness, squinting, pawing at the eyes or thick discharge, contact your vet and mention the recall by name.

There is no Food Standards Agency alert for this recall. It does not appear on the FSA list below, so checking that list alone would not tell you about it.

How to check your dog’s food

A recall almost never covers everything a company makes. It usually covers particular recipes, particular pack sizes and particular batches, so the question is not whether you own the brand but whether you own the batch.

  1. Find the batch code and the best before or use by date. On tins and pouches they are usually stamped on the base or the seam. On frozen raw food they are on the sleeve or the bag.
  2. Compare both against the recall notice. If the recall names a batch and yours is not on it, your pack is not part of that recall.
  3. If it matches, or if you cannot read the code, stop feeding it. Do not donate it and do not sell it on.
  4. With raw food, treat it as a human health issue too. Salmonella is the most common reason UK pet food gets recalled and it passes to people through bowls, utensils, hands and the dog’s own faeces. Wash everything the food touched.

Getting your money back

Your contract is with whoever sold it to you, not with the manufacturer. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 goods must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose, and a product the maker has recalled is a strong basis for a refund. That holds whether or not the manufacturer has set up its own scheme.

In practice most recalls ask you to return the product to the shop for a full refund, and most shops do not insist on a receipt for a recalled item. If a retailer refuses, Citizens Advice can take it further. A manufacturer scheme sits on top of that right rather than replacing it.

Where UK recall alerts come from, and what they miss

The Food Standards Agency publishes product recall information notices, which is the closest thing the UK has to an official list. Local authority Trading Standards teams act on them. The FSA list is genuinely useful, and every entry below links to the original alert.

But it is not a complete record of UK dog food recalls, and it is worth understanding why. A company that decides to recall a product itself is not obliged to produce an FSA alert, and an FSA alert is not automatic simply because a recall is happening or because the agency has been told about it.

The Years recall is the clearest example we have seen. Years said it advised the FSA and Trading Standards before issuing the recall on 17 August 2026. The FSA has published other product recalls since then. It has published none about Years, so an owner checking the official list in good faith would find nothing at all about the largest UK dog food recall of the year. We set out the detail in our report on the Years recall.

That is the reason this page keeps the two lists apart rather than merging them. If you are checking whether a food is safe, the official list is the place to start and not the place to stop.

What the record actually shows

The FSA has published 19 dog and general pet food recalls since 2018. The pattern in them is strong and worth knowing: 11 of the 19 were salmonella, and 12 involved raw or frozen raw food. The rest are mostly vitamin D at unsafe levels, plus one case of metal fragments.

That is not an argument against feeding raw, which plenty of people do carefully and without incident. It is an argument for handling it as you would raw chicken for yourself, because the recall record says that is what it is.

How this page is kept up to date

The FSA list is rebuilt from the Food Standards Agency’s own open data feed and was last checked on 1 September 2026. Recalls that never reached the FSA are added by hand, and each one records the date we last verified it against the manufacturer’s notice.

Scope: dog food and general pet food sold in the UK. 3 cat-only recalls in the same FSA feed are left off this page. We do not claim this is every recall that has ever happened, and if you know of one missing from it we would like to hear about it.

If your dog is unwell, speak to your vet. Nothing here is a diagnosis and we are not a veterinary practice.
