What to expect at a club
Ring before you turn up. Most clubs run waiting lists, most want your dog to have some basic obedience first, and a lot of them do not take beginners mid-course.
Ask what age they will start a dog jumping at full height. A dog's growth plates close anywhere from around six months in a toy breed to two years in a giant one, and later in a dog neutered young, so a good club will keep the bars low until your vet is happy. One that shrugs at the question is telling you something useful.
Nearly all of them will let you watch a session before you commit. Take them up on it, because the difference between clubs is mostly the atmosphere. Our guide to getting started covers the obstacles and what you can sensibly practise at home.
Agility shows near Falkirk
Once your dog is 18 months old and you have both found your feet at a club, a show is the next step. These are the places to find one.
- Agilitynet show diary, which also covers independent and league shows and can sort by distance from your postcode.
- Agility Plaza, where many shows take entries, with a map.
- Canine Hoopers UK show diary for hoopers, the no-jumps version of the sport.
Every show has a closing date for entries, so check it before you plan around one.
Questions about agility in Falkirk
How much do agility classes cost in Falkirk?
It depends on the club. Across the clubs we checked, a session typically costs £5 to £16, a beginners' course runs from around £50 to £110, and some clubs also charge a yearly membership. Ask each club for its current prices.
What age can my dog start agility?
The Royal Kennel Club recommends no training on agility equipment until a dog is at least a year old, and a dog must be 18 months old to compete at a licensed show. Large and giant breeds often need longer before jumping at full height, so ask your vet.
Does my dog need to be a pedigree to compete?
No. Crossbreeds can compete at Royal Kennel Club shows once they are on the club's Activity Register.
Where can I find agility shows near Falkirk?
The Royal Kennel Club's Find a Show search lists every licensed show, and Agilitynet's show diary also covers independent and league shows.
Is hoopers better for an older dog?
Often, yes. Hoopers uses hoops, barrels and tunnels with no jumps, and Canine Hoopers UK describes it as low impact, so it suits older dogs, very large or very small breeds, and handlers who cannot run.
